A 1.2 pF input, so the probe stops being part of the circuit

The SAP1000 is a single-ended active probe: 1 GHz of bandwidth into an input of 1 MΩ in parallel with 1.2 pF, powered and configured by the oscilloscope over SAPBus.

That capacitance figure is the whole reason active probes exist. A general-purpose passive probe presents something like 10–16 pF at the tip, and at any real frequency that capacitance is a load your circuit has to drive. It rounds edges, damps ringing and shifts resonances — so the waveform you are looking at is partly the probe's doing. At 1.2 pF the SAP1000 takes roughly a tenth of that out of the circuit, and what you see on screen is much closer to what the node was actually doing before you touched it.

What it is for

Fast edges and clock signals

At 1 GHz the probe resolves rise times a passive probe rounds off. This is the everyday case: an edge that looked soft through a 10 pF tip turns out to be considerably faster.

Probing a live circuit without changing it

1.2 pF of loading rather than 10–16 pF, so oscillators keep oscillating at the right frequency and marginal timing stays marginal instead of appearing to pass.

No power supply, no manual setup

SAPBus carries power and identity. The scope names the probe, applies its attenuation and offers the offset control — nothing to configure and nothing extra to plug in.

Before you order

  • ±8 V is the signal window. The input dynamic range is ±8 V, so this is a probe for logic, clocks and small-signal work — not for a 24 V rail. The ±12 V offset range lets you centre that window on a DC level, but it does not widen it.
  • 20 V is a hard ceiling. Twenty volts is the non-destructive limit, not a rating you can work at. If the node might swing beyond it, use a passive or differential probe instead.

SAPBus — the oscilloscope does the setup

This probe connects through SAPBus, which carries power, identity and control down the same connector as the signal. The oscilloscope recognises the probe by name, applies its attenuation automatically and puts its offset control on screen. There is no external power supply to find and nothing to set by hand.

SAPBus inputs are found on the SDS7000A, SDS6000A, SDS6000L, SDS5000X and SDS3000X HD families. It will not work on an oscilloscope with plain BNC inputs.

Tell us your oscilloscope and we will give you the real bandwidth

Probe bandwidth and the bandwidth you actually get are different numbers, and the difference depends on the oscilloscope. Send us the model and the signal you are chasing and we will tell you what this probe will genuinely deliver — before you buy it.
