NSD28 — noise source driver

A small hardware driver that unlocks noise-figure measurement on the SSA5000A. Working with the SSA5000-NF licence, the NSD28 drives an external calibrated noise source using the classic Y-factor technique, so you can measure how much noise a device under test adds — a key figure of merit for receivers and low-noise amplifiers.

Siglent NSD28 noise source driver
  • Pairs with the SSA5000-NF license

The NSD28 is the hardware half of noise-figure measurement: fit it together with the SSA5000-NF software licence and the SSA5000A becomes a noise-figure meter.

  • +28 V pulsed drive

It supplies the +28 V pulsed bias (the “28” in its name) that switches a calibrated noise-diode source between its ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ states over a BNC drive lead.

  • Y-factor method

The analyzer measures noise power in both states and computes NF = ENR − 10·log(Y − 1); the ENR (typically 6–15 dB) comes from the noise source’s own calibration data.

  • Characterise amps, mixers & converters

With a compatible noise source (9 kHz – 7.5 GHz, −30 to 0 dBm output) you can measure the added noise of amplifiers, mixers and frequency converters directly on the bench.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the SSA5083A and SSA5085A?

Frequency range: the SSA5083A covers 9 kHz to 13.6 GHz and the SSA5085A to 26.5 GHz. Everything else — the platform, 12.1-inch multi-touch screen, phase noise, DANL and options — is identical, and the SSA5083A can be upgraded to 26.5 GHz later.

Can I upgrade the frequency range later?

Yes. The SSA5000-F5 license lifts an SSA5083A from 13.6 GHz to the full 26.5 GHz, so you can start at 13.6 GHz and extend when you need it.

Does the SSA5000A do real-time analysis?

Yes, with the RTA1 activation license (25 MHz), upgradeable to 40 MHz with the B40 option. Real-time mode gives density, spectrogram and power-versus-time views with a 7.2 µs 100% probability of intercept.

Which measurement options are available?

Frequency upgrade (F5), real-time (RTA1 / B40), broadcast & advanced measurements (AMK), analog and digital modulation (AMA / DMA), Bluetooth (BT), noise figure (NF, with the NSD28 noise-source driver), phase noise (PN) and the 10M-OCXO-L high-accuracy reference.

How does it compare to the SSA3000X-R?

The SSA5000A is the flagship: up to 26.5 GHz, −105 dBc/Hz phase noise, a 12.1-inch screen with HDMI and the widest set of measurement modes. The SSA3000X-R tops out at 7.5 GHz but includes a built-in vector network analyzer and DTF.
