SDS2000HD-SpaceWire — SpaceWire decode for the SDS2000X HD

A software key that makes the SDS2000X HD decode SpaceWire links: data and strobe go in on two channels, characters and packets come out under the waveform and in a table.

SpaceWire is the data link of spacecraft payloads and on-board computers: two signals per direction, Data and Strobe, from which the receiver rebuilds the clock. That makes it awkward on a plain oscilloscope — there is no clock line to look at — and straightforward with a decoder that does the data-strobe recovery for you.

The decoder takes Data and Strobe from two analogue channels, recovers the clock at a fixed rate or detects it automatically, synchronises on nulls, on a pattern or manually, and shows the link either as individual N- and L-characters or grouped into packets. It is a decode key: the oscilloscope does not trigger on SpaceWire content.

The SDS2000X HD: the oscilloscope this key is for. The unit photographed carries the 500 MHz label of the same chassis.

What the key adds

Character and packet table

Time, type (data, EOP, FCT, NULL), parity, data-control flag, time code, data and an error column.

2 to 400 Mbit/s

Preset rates from 2 to 400 Mbit/s or a custom value, with fixed-speed or automatic clock recovery.

Four ways to synchronise

Auto, Nulls, Pattern or Manual — for links that are idle, running, or captured mid-packet.

Two views

N/L-character view for link-level debugging, packet view for the data that travels over it.

Which oscilloscope it is for

Both models of the SDS2000X HD series, and an SDS2104X HD you already own. Keys for other Siglent series have their own order codes and are not interchangeable.

Put Data and Strobe on different channel pairs

The SDS2000X HD samples at 2 GSa/s when only one channel of each pair (C1/C2 and C3/C4) is on, and at 1 GSa/s when both are. Connect Data to C1 and Strobe to C3 and both keep the full sample rate. For links in the hundreds of Mbit/s choose the 350 MHz model, or a 500 MHz upgrade: a 400 Mbit/s bit lasts 2.5 ns, against a 1.7 ns rise time on the 200 MHz model.

DeliveryLicence key for the instrument’s serial number

From the SDS2000X HD data sheet EN02B. I²C, SPI, UART, CAN and LIN trigger and decode are standard on the series; all other protocols are listed on the licences page.

How it is delivered

1 · Send us the serial number

A software key is generated for one instrument. Add the serial number to the order, or mail it afterwards.

2 · Receive the key

The licence key is delivered by e-mail — nothing is shipped and nothing leaves your bench.

3 · Enter it on the oscilloscope

Enter the key in the options menu; the decoder appears in the list of protocols and stays with that unit.

Questions about the SDS2000HD-SpaceWire

Can the oscilloscope trigger on a SpaceWire character or packet?

No. Siglent specifies SpaceWire on this series as decode only. Trigger on an edge of Data or Strobe and read the characters in the table.

How fast a link can it really decode?

The decoder accepts rates up to 400 Mbit/s. What limits you is the analogue path: bandwidth and sample rate. With Data on C1 and Strobe on C3 the instrument samples both at 2 GSa/s; the 350 MHz model has a 1 ns rise time, the 200 MHz model 1.7 ns.

How do I probe an LVDS pair?

SpaceWire uses low-voltage differential signalling. A differential probe on each pair gives the cleanest result; tell us the link rate and we will suggest one.

Does it work on the digital channels?

No. The sources are analogue channels, C1 to C4.

What do you need from me?

The serial number of the oscilloscope. The key is generated for that instrument only.

Decoding SpaceWire on a new oscilloscope?

Tell us the bus, the bit rate and what else is on the bench. We quote the SDS2000X HD with the keys and probes as one set.
