Precision Source Measure Unit (SMU)

SMM3000X Series

A precision four-quadrant Source Measure Unit that sources and measures voltage and current in one tightly-integrated instrument. Spanning ±210 V and ±3.03 A DC (±10.5 A pulse) at 31.8 W per channel, it resolves down to 10 fA and 100 nV with 6½-digit readback — ideal for characterising semiconductors, LEDs and laser diodes, sensors, materials and batteries. DC, pulse, sweep and list modes, 100,000 readings/s acquisition, a 5-inch capacitive touchscreen and SCPI over USB/LAN make it equally at home in R&D and automated production test, in single- or dual-channel versions.

Source and measure, across four quadrants

Source and measure, across four quadrants

A Source Measure Unit combines a precision programmable source and a high-resolution meter that track together. The SMM3000X can force a voltage and measure the resulting current — or force a current and measure the voltage — while sourcing or sinking power in any of the four quadrants, so it characterises active and passive devices a plain supply or meter cannot.

  • Force V / measure I, or force I / measure V
  • Four-quadrant operation — source or sink
  • ±210 V, ±3.03 A DC, ±10.5 A pulse, 31.8 W per channel
  • 0.015% + 225 µV voltage & 0.1% + 100 pA current accuracy

Femto-amp resolution for precision device test

With 10 fA current and 100 nV voltage resolution and 6½-digit readback, the SMM3000X resolves leakage currents and small signal levels that ordinary instruments miss — the basis for semiconductor, sensor and materials characterisation.

  • 10 fA / 100 nV resolution, 6½-digit (2.1 M count)
  • Linear & logarithmic sweeps, list mode (10 µs interval)
  • Up to 100,000 readings/s, 100k-point time-stamped storage
  • Single-channel (SMM3311X) or dual-channel (SMM3312X)

Rear panel, triaxial connections & remote

Triaxial outputs preserve the guarding needed for low-current measurement, and the standard USB/LAN interfaces make the SMM3000X easy to automate. Optional banana-to-triaxial adapters connect it to test fixtures and wafer probe stations.

  • Triaxial force/sense outputs with guard
  • USB & LAN (embedded web server) standard; SCPI
  • Optional USB-GPIB adapter for GPIB buses
  • Optional STC6-series banana-to-triaxial adapters

Frequently asked questions

What is a Source Measure Unit (SMU)?

An SMU combines a precision programmable voltage/current source with a high-resolution meter that operate together. It can force a voltage and measure current, or force a current and measure voltage, while sourcing or sinking power in all four quadrants — ideal for characterising devices such as semiconductors, LEDs and sensors.

What is the difference between the SMM3311X and SMM3312X?

The SMM3311X is a single-channel SMU and the SMM3312X is a dual-channel version; both share the same ±210 V, ±3.03 A DC (±10.5 A pulse), 31.8 W/channel performance and 10 fA / 100 nV resolution. Choose the dual-channel model when you need to source and measure two nodes at once.

How low can it measure?

Down to 10 fA of current and 100 nV of voltage, with 6½-digit (2,100,000-count) readback — fine enough for device leakage and small-signal characterisation.

Which accessories do I need for triaxial fixtures?

The outputs are triaxial. The optional STC6-series banana-to-triaxial adapters (STC6P4W 4-wire/Kelvin, STC6P2W 2-wire with guard, STC6P2W-B 2-wire) connect the SMM3000X to test fixtures and wafer probe stations; a USB-GPIB adapter adds GPIB control.

Can it be automated?

Yes — USB and LAN with an embedded web server are standard, with full SCPI command support and optional GPIB via the USB-GPIB adapter, plus list/sweep modes and up to 100,000 readings/s for high-throughput test.
