The dedicated kit for the SSG6000A

A 19-inch, 2U mounting kit made for one chassis: the SSG6000A microwave signal generators and the SSG6082A-V vector generator. Nothing else in the Siglent range uses it, and it does not substitute for any other kit.

It is the most expensive rack kit Siglent make, which looks odd until you notice what goes in it. The generators these hold cost between €21,050 and €46,070. The kit is under two per cent of that — and rather less than the cost of one instrument coming off a bench.

At 20 and 40 GHz there is a second argument. Fixing the instrument fixes its cabling, and cable geometry that does not move is cable loss that does not drift between measurements.

Installed. An ear bolts to each side of the chassis and reaches out to the rack rails, so the instrument hangs from the rails rather than resting on anything below it. The front panel finishes flush with the ears, and the slotted rack holes give a little play for lining the unit up with whatever is mounted above and below.

What it fits

Four instruments, three analog and one vector. Prices are there to put the €335 in proportion.

The SSG-RMK is not this kit

One digit apart, different chassis, not interchangeable. The SSG-RMK at €159 is for the SSG3000X, SSG5000X, SSG5000A and SDG7000A. If you have an SSG6000A, this page is the right one — and if you have an SSG5083A, it is not. Check the model on the front panel before ordering either.

2U, with one caveat

Siglent's accessory page states 2U, and so does the original description of this product. Siglent's price list says 3U. We have gone with 2U because two sources agree and one of them is the more specific, but if your rack space is tight enough for the difference to matter, ask us and we will have it confirmed before you order rather than after.

What you get, and what to leave room for

Two things worth seeing before you plan the rack: what actually comes in the box, and what is on the back of the instrument that will need cable depth behind it.

Plan the depth for this: trigger in/out, signal valid, pulse in/out, 10 MHz out, reference in and external modulation input — six BNCs — plus USB device, USB host, LAN, the OCXO bay and the mains inlet.

A practical note on cabling. Six rear BNCs and the RF output on the front means a racked SSG6000A can end up with a lot of cable behind it. Leave enough depth that the microwave cable is not forced into a tight bend — bend radius is a specification on those, and violating it changes loss and match rather than just looking untidy.

Why rack a microwave source

Tidiness is the least of it.

It is 1% of the instrument

The cheapest SSG6000A is €21,050 and the 40 GHz SSG6087A is €46,070. This kit is between 0.7% and 1.6% of that. Weighed against one instrument sliding off a bench, it is not really a purchasing decision.

Cable stability is a measurement issue at these frequencies

At 20 or 40 GHz a flexed cable is not a tidiness problem, it is a repeatability problem. Fixing the instrument in a rack fixes the geometry with it, so the calibration you did on Monday still holds on Friday.

The connectors are the fragile part

2.92 mm and 2.4 mm connectors do not forgive side load. An instrument that cannot be nudged is an instrument whose RF port is not being levered by its own cable.

It belongs in the system, not beside it

These generators are usually one element of an automated setup. Racked, the front panel is always in the same place and the cabling is dressed once.

Questions we are asked

Is it 2U or 3U? I have seen both.

So have we, and it is worth being straight about. Siglent's own accessory page says 2U, and so does the description on this listing. Siglent's price list says 3U. Two sources to one, and the more specific one, so we have gone with 2U — but if your rack space is tight enough that the difference matters, ask us and we will get it confirmed before you order.

Will the SSG-RMK fit my SSG6000A instead? It is cheaper.

No. The names are one digit apart and the kits are not interchangeable — the SSG-RMK is for the SSG3000X, SSG5000X, SSG5000A and SDG7000A, which are a different chassis. This is the only kit for the SSG6000A.

Does it fit the SSG6082A-V as well as the analog models?

Yes. Siglent list the kit for the SSG6000A and the SSG6000A-V together. They are quite different instruments — the SSG6083A/6085A/6087A are microwave analog generators with no internal I/Q, while the SSG6082A-V is a vector generator with an internal I/Q baseband — but they share the chassis.

Why does it cost more than the other rack kits?

Bigger, heavier chassis, and a considerably more valuable instrument sitting in it. Put against the €21,050 to €46,070 the generators themselves cost, the kit is between 0.7% and 1.6% of the purchase. It is the least expensive part of the installation.

Does it change anything about the RF performance?

Not directly, but indirectly it helps. Mechanical stability is what keeps a calibrated cable run behaving the same between measurements, and at 20 or 40 GHz that matters more than most people expect. Racking the instrument is one way of stopping the cabling from being disturbed.

Can I still get to the rear panel?

Yes, as with any rack installation — leave working depth behind the instrument for the RF output, the 10 MHz reference, LO and trigger connections, and do not force tight bends into microwave cable to make it fit.
