SDS2000HD-CANXL — CAN XL decode for the SDS2000X HD

A software key that makes the SDS2000X HD decode CAN XL frames: the bus is drawn with its fields under the waveform and listed frame by frame in a table.

CAN XL is the third generation of CAN: the same arbitration as classical CAN and CAN FD, followed by a data phase that can run at up to 20 Mbit/s and carry far longer payloads. On a mixed network the three frame formats share one pair of wires, which is exactly when a decoder earns its place — a frame that looks like noise on an older instrument is named, split into ID, length and data, and time-stamped.

The decoder handles both SIC mode and Fast mode transceivers, with separate rates for the arbitration, FD and XL phases, and it runs on an analogue channel or on a digital channel of the SPL2016 logic probe. It is a decode key: the oscilloscope does not trigger on CAN XL content. You trigger on the signal and read the frames in the capture.

What the key adds

Frame table

Time, frame type, ID, DLC, data, frame CRC and acknowledge for every frame in the acquisition.

XL data phase to 20 Mbit/s

Nominal rate 10 kbit/s to 10 Mbit/s, FD rate 500 kbit/s to 10 Mbit/s, XL rate 500 kbit/s to 20 Mbit/s, or a custom value for each.

SIC and Fast mode

Both physical-layer modes of CAN XL are selectable in the decoder set-up.

Analogue or digital source

Any of C1–C4, or D0–D15 with the SPL2016, leaving the analogue channels free for the signals around the bus.

Which oscilloscope it is for

Both models of the SDS2000X HD series, and an SDS2104X HD you already own. Keys for other Siglent series have their own order codes and are not interchangeable.

Decode, not trigger

The SDS2000X HD triggers on classical CAN as standard and on CAN FD with the SDS2000HD-CANFD key. CAN XL is decoded but not triggered on: use an edge, pulse-width or pattern trigger, capture long, and find the frame in the table.

DeliveryLicence key for the instrument’s serial number

From the SDS2000X HD data sheet EN02B. I²C, SPI, UART, CAN and LIN trigger and decode are standard on the series; all other protocols are listed on the licences page.

How it is delivered

1 · Send us the serial number

A software key is generated for one instrument. Add the serial number to the order, or mail it afterwards.

2 · Receive the key

The licence key is delivered by e-mail — nothing is shipped and nothing leaves your bench.

3 · Enter it on the oscilloscope

Enter the key in the options menu; the decoder appears in the list of protocols and stays with that unit.

Questions about the SDS2000HD-CANXL

Can the oscilloscope trigger on a CAN XL frame?

No. Siglent specifies CAN XL on this series as decode only. Classical CAN trigger is standard and CAN FD trigger comes with the SDS2000HD-CANFD key.

Do I also need the CAN FD key?

Only if you want to trigger on and decode CAN FD frames as CAN FD. The two keys are independent; on a mixed network many users take both.

Is 200 MHz bandwidth enough?

For decoding, yes: at 20 Mbit/s a bit lasts 50 ns and the SDS2204X HD has a 1.7 ns rise time. If you also want to judge ringing and edge symmetry in the XL data phase, the 350 MHz model shows more of it.

Can I decode on the digital channels?

Yes. D0–D15 of the SPL2016 logic probe are valid sources, at 500 MSa/s.

What do you need from me?

The serial number of the oscilloscope. The key is generated for that instrument only.
